Signs of termites
- Swarmers: winged insects indoors, often in spring, and piles of shed wings by doors and sills.
- Mud tubes on foundation walls, piers or in the crawl space.
- Hollow or blistered wood, sticking doors and soft spots in floors.
- Frass: tiny pellets near wood (drywood termites).
What to do
- Don't break open mud tubes or spray swarmers; it makes finding the colony harder.
- Keep a few wings or bugs in a bag to show the inspector.
- Move firewood and mulch away from the foundation.
Treatment options
Pros use liquid soil treatments, bait stations or spot treatments for drywood termites, depending on the type and where they are.

FAQ
Termites: common questions
Flying ants or termites?
Termites have straight antennae, a thick waist and wings of equal length. Flying ants have bent antennae and a pinched waist.
What are the first signs of termites?
Swarmers or piles of discarded wings near windows and doors, mud tubes on the foundation, hollow-sounding wood and doors or windows that suddenly stick.
Are termite swarmers inside the house an emergency?
They don't bite or sting, but swarmers indoors usually mean a colony nearby. Schedule an inspection soon rather than waiting.
How often should I get a termite inspection?
Once a year is common, especially in the South and anywhere termites are active.
What's the difference between subterranean and drywood termites?
Subterranean termites live in the soil and build mud tubes. Drywood termites live inside dry wood and leave small pellets. They're treated differently.
Do you do the treatment yourselves?
No. EmergencyExterminators is a referral service. The pest control company you speak with does the work and agrees the details with you directly.
